The daily diary and my daily comments about what I'm looking at and thinking about online, especially on Twitter, Facebook, Google, YouTube, and even in my email, I'll post on this page of this blog and even share those thoughts on my social media. And you're welcome to check them out and let me know what you think about what I'm looking at and what I think about what's going on in the news and life everyday. I'll try to do this daily, but I can't promise that I'll be able to do that.

5/24/21 - Manu Raju: "Mitt Romney, who had expressed some reservations of the Jan. 6 commission bill, just told me he would be a YES if the bill came forward for a vote.

“I would support the bill.”

5/28/2021 - Bill Kristol: "Marjorie Taylor Greene bragged yesterday that she and Matt Gaetz are taking over the GOP. Today Senate Republicans are set to block a January 6th commission that could make that somewhat more difficult. Violence and authoritarianism has enablers as well as instigators."

Fred Schneider: "Well, Donald Trump already took over what used to be the Republican Party and GOP. So maybe MTG and Gaetz have taken Donald Trump's party from him."

Source:CNN- U.S. Representatives Matt Gaetz and Marjorie T. Greene

If Marjorie T. Greene and Matt Gaetz want what's left of the Republican Party, let them have it and hopefully they'll go down as some Far-Right Nationalist party have no power whatsoever in America, similar to how Nationalist parties go down in Europe. And the real Republicans can come out of hiding and form a new Center-Right party in this country and perhaps Bill Kristol will be one of their leaders.

The MTG-Matt Gaetz is a political marriage that's made for hell (or political reality TV) and should end like any other hellish marriage, either in prison or in divorce. I guess they could divorce in prison.

5/30/2021 - Manu Raju: "Kyrsten Sinema office declining to comment about why she missed Friday’s vote procedural to open debate on Jan. 6 commission. She supports the legislation and co-authored a statement last week imploring Republicans to vote for it."

Fred Schneider
: "What they said in private was: "Senator Sinema is too scared about a Trump backlash in Arizona, to do anything that would offend them." Actually, I don't know that, but it makes sense."

Actually, I already know the answer to this, but let's say I didn't for a second: what's the point in serving in Congress, if you're too afraid to vote, whether it's Senator Kyrsten Sinema or anyone else? I guess they just want to office and job title.

6/02/2021 - "Oscar-winning actress and director Lee Grant reflects on the onscreen power and natural charm of Ida Lupino, actress and groundbreaking director during the studio era of Hollywood, in this TCM original production. Look for these films on Watch TCM at:TCM."

Source:TCM- with a profile of Hollywood Babydoll Ida Lupino.

From TCM

If the expression she's tougher than she looks means anything, it was written for Ida Lupino and you could add Lee Grant to that list as well. I refer to Ida as a Hollywood Babydoll because that's how she appears on the outside as a naturally adorable sweetheart who couldn't even hurt an ant. But like Lee Grant, Ida always played tough, hard-ass (to be frank) characters who didn't want yo screw around with (especially if you knew who you were screwing with) because they could destroy you.

Ida wasn't an actress, but a filmmaker who made films though acting, directing, and writing. She's probably the first great female Hollywood filmmaker that we've ever had and was making films in the 1940s in a time when women were barely working at all (or least didn't have careers) and were living in Jerry Falwell's and Phyllis Sclhalfy's 1940s and 50s America where women were expected to just get married and raise their husband's kids. Ida wasn't just way ahead of her time, but one of the best Hollywood filmmakers that we've ever had.

6/03/2021 - "Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin tells CNN’s
@mkraju
he’s not ready to move forward with Biden’s infrastructure proposal through reconciliation and that talks with Republicans should continue. “We need do something the bipartisan way.”

Source:CNN- U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (Democrat, West Virginia) talking to CNN's Congressional Correspondent Manu Raju.

From The Situation Room

I don't believe this is an indefinite position for Senator Joe Manchin. If you're Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, you should asking Senator Manchin: "What do I and West Virginia need for you to vote for infrastructure, short of Senate Republicans voting for the bill?" Because you might get Senator Murkowski or Senator Collins to vote for a trillion-dollar bill (that's fully paid for) but what's more likely is that not even one Republican votes for the bill and wouldn't even take the 600 billion-dollar compromise, if President Biden and Congressional Democrats went along with that bill.

08/18/2021 - Happy Birthday to the Great #RobertRedford. Here he is with his good friend #PaulNewman as they're shooting #ButchCassidyAndTheSundanceKid (1969) one of my favorite movies.

TCM: "While Robert Redford was already rising in fame during the 60s, BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID ('69) was a turning point for his career. Starring alongside Paul Newman, he solidified his on-screen image as the "sardonic good guy."

And almost 50 years later our political system and career politicians and politicos, are probably just as crooked and dishonest as they were back then. So it's still a very relevant movie.

TCM: "In addition to advocating for the arts, Robert Redford also has played a role in supporting the LGBTQ community, Native American Rights, and issues surrounding environmentalism.

9/01/2021 - Alfred Hitchcock is my favorite film director and Strangers On A Train is one of my top 5 Hitch films. Saw it the other night and Robert Walker is deadly funny in it. Plus, I couldn't keep my eyes off Ruth Roman every time the camera was on her. I still have that crush.

Carter Thallon: "In his 1951 film, Strangers on a Train, Alfred Hitchcock uses symbols to imply that the antagonist, Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker), is deeply connected to Pluto, the god of the underworld in Greek mythology. Bruno’s connection to Pluto emphasizes the truly malevolent nature of Bruno’s character."

Whether it's Eva Marie Saint, Kim Novak, Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly, Karen Black, and in this film with those beautiful eyes, cheeks, the sweet, sexy voice it was Ruth Roman.

9?20-21 - I know it's a couple weeks late, but Theodore Roosevelt represents what real Progressives think whether its about Labor Day or any other holiday. Not Socialists who pretend to be Progressives.

9/21/2021 - "The House of Representatives voted to pass legislation on Tuesday to prevent a government shutdown at the end of the month and suspend the nation's borrowing limit, setting up a showdown with Republicans who insist Democrats should act alone to stave off a looming debt crisis. The party line vote was 220-211.

Government funding is set to expire on September 30, but the stopgap bill the House approved would extend funding and keep the government open through December 3. In addition, the measure includes a debt limit suspension through December 16, 2022. It would also provide $28.6 billion in disaster relief funding and $6.3 billion to assist Afghanistan evacuees.

The bill now faces an uphill battle in the Senate. By attaching the debt limit suspension to the must-pass funding bill, Democrats are essentially daring Republicans to vote no and spark a shutdown.
It's not yet clear what Democrats' plan B would be if the effort to avert a shutdown and suspend the debt limit runs aground in the Senate, as it appears is on track to happen."

Source:CNN- anchor Jake Tapper, interviewing U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn.

From CNN

This bill is what's known as DOA (or dead on arrival) in the Senate. Even if you could pass it with 50 votes plus Vice President Kamala Harris, you would probably lose at least 3 Senate Democrats and would have a single Senate Republican voting for the bill.

So what Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (Democrat, New York) needs to do is get his entire caucus on board and workout out an agreement with them and try to find 5-10 Senate Republicans that he can work with and workout a compromise, that would probably fund the government and raise the debt limit, but where the extension might have to be paid for, to get any Senate Republican votes instead.

What I think Leader Schumer is going to do instead is play chicken and try to blame Senate Minority Mitch McConnell (Republican, Kentucky) and company for the government shutdown and perhaps default on the national debt. But we'll see.

Fred Schneider: "Ding! Small world, so did I. Actually, I heard of the movie, but saw it for the first time Monday night."

Vance Wittie: "Down Three Dark Streets has an interesting premise that distinguishes it from the run of the mill police procedural. The investigators and the audience do not know which of three separate cases is the one that led to the death of the FBI agent. There are a lot of plates spinning and the writers do a deft job of moving from one case to another. It's very much plot driven rather than character driven. The G-men could have been played by just about anyone and Crawford's prodigious talent is sort of wasted. The one stand-out performance is Martha Hyer's. There are flashes of intelligence in her character as well as a touching, if misguided, loyalty. Whenever she is offscreen the film droops a little."

Fred Schneider: "Noir Alley's Eddie Muller compared the film with Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue. Pretty good company. We disagree with Martha Hyer having the only standout appearance."

Vance Wittie: "Hill Street Blues was the first series to feature multiple plot lines going across episodes for an unpredictable length of time. It was really the first "modern" TV drama and the godfather of "prestige television." Three Dark Streets had different plot lines but of course the audience knew they would all be resolved within the running time of the film. It really allowed the writers to stitch together three rather sketchy stories to make a pretty interesting film. Safe to say it was decades ahead of its time, if not as revolutionary as Hill Street."

Fred Schneider: "Well, right, of course the viewers knew the crimes would probably be solved. This is Hollywood, the land of make believe."

It's been said that the movie Airplane! was based off of Zero Hour, with Zero Hour being the drama and Airplane! being the comedy. 9/22/2022 - Fred Schneider: Hollywood Goddess Ruth Roman, Dorothy McGuire, and Van Johnson, in Invitation from 1952. I think this movie is an excellent soap opera, with the Ruth once again playing the woman in waiting. But this time for a man whose married to a dying woman. Good film.

9/24/2022 - Thomas R. Dean: "It's a very good movie! The odd thing about it however is the assumption - certainly felt by Ruth Roman as well as repeatedly voiced by under-confident McGuire that Roman is far more attractive. It's so wrong that it's quite funny! I can only think that in the early 1950s, if a woman was on the thin side, she was regarded as scrawny and unattractive - whereas Roman is quite curvy. But certainly it would now be hard to find anyone who saw McGuire as unattractive and that there needs to be some explanation why Van Johnson would marry her!"

Ellen Bowker Pierce (played by Dorothy) is trying to convince Maud Redwick (I love that name: played by Ruth) that she's in love with her husband (played by Van Johnson) and she's trying to tell her that she's sort of sorry that she has Daniel now, not Maud and that Maud should be happy for them. Maud is not having it. Ruth Roman was pretty good with the comedic insults and you see that in this scene.

10/05/2022 - Fred Schneider: Saw the Columbo film Lovely But Lethal last week. And yes, Vera Miles is absolutely adorable in this film and yet she's also a two-time murderer. So the title fits her character perfectly.

Columblr: "In “Lovely But Lethal,” Vera Miles is Viveca Scott, a cosmetics magnate who needs a miracle product to keep her company from going under. When researcher Martin Sheen is discovered taking the formula to the competition, she murders him with the most deadly weapon known to mankind – a microscope. Throw in an alkie chemist, some Vincent Price, a little Bruce Kirby and oh, hey, another killing (this time, by poisoned cigarette) and no amount of foundation can cover up the blemishes of subterfuge and murder. Gary Hogeboom didn't ruin Cowboys QB Danny White's career, Tom Landry did that almost bye himself. But Coach Landry thought that Hogeboom would be the next great Cowboys QB, because he had a rocket arm and was fairly accurate, as well as mobile.

Hogeboom was overconfident, threw too many INT's, didn't read defenses very well, and as a result, became a journeyman NFL QB, whose probably better well-known as one of the first so-called reality TV stars during the 2000s, than as an NFL QB.

Most offensive lineman in the 1970s and 80s, weren't 300 pounds. And there were almost no defensive lineman either that big and strong. The supersized OL and DL became fairly common in the 1990s. But during Butz's career, he was like a monster, playing against boys.

11/17/2022- Fred Schneider: I forgot the exact name of the play that the Redskins called on this, but offensive line coach Joe Bugel explained it perfectly in the NFL Films highlight show of this game.

This play was basically designed to get all the Dolphins defenders blocked, except one DB, with the thinking being that no DB in the NFL was going to stop John Riggins one-one-one, especially 4th and 1, in a Super Bowl game. And it worked perfectly.

Anyone who believes John Riggins didn't have speed or even great speed, obviously hasn't seen this play. No Dolphin defender in sight, as JR runs down the field for the go head TD in Super Bowl 17.

11/22/2022 - Fred Schneider: The Bears of the 1970s aren't as bad as advertised. They didn't have much of an offense, other than Walter Payton and a few players who had good seasons here and there. But they had good talent on defense, like Jim Osborne.

Jim Osborne sacking Redskins QB Sonny Jurgensen, perhaps in 1972.

The Sports Notebook: "The Chicago Bears used a seventh-round pick on Jim Osborne in 1972. That small investment produced a defensive tackle who would anchor the middle of the Bears line over a decade. Osborne started almost every game as a rookie. He became a pass-rushing force in his second season, 1973, when he recorded 10 sacks. That was one of three seasons Osborne produced double-digit sacks, including a career-high 15 in 1976. He started for two playoff teams, in 1977 and 1979, and was able to be a contributor to the early years of Mike Ditka’s successful rebuilding project in the early 1980s."

(As the Bullets are now called) Moses was good with the Bullets, but they only had him for 2 seasons and they were a 500, 1st round playoff exit team. The 76ers should've never traded him. They spend too much time dealing with the family members of these folks that are involved in the heist. And not enough of Gloria Grahame and Shelley Winters in this film, at least for my taste.

IMDB: Dave Burke looks to hire two men to assist him in a bank raid: Earle Slater, a white ex-convict, and Johnny Ingram, a Black gambler. Both are reluctant, but Burke arranges for Ingram's creditors to pressure him, while Slater feels humiliated by his failure to provide for his girlfriend; they eventually accept. The Film Archives: First off, this Robert Wise film written by Abraham Polonsky (using the front name of John O. Kilens because of the HUAC blacklist) has a fabulously fatalistic noir title. Harry Belafonte (also producer here helping drive the film to be made)’s Ingram is a gambler as well to give the set up and title an added layer as well.

George Tyerbyter: Starring the incredibly talented Harry Belafonte and directed by the great Robert Wise, it’s “Odds Against Tomorrow” (1959)—an especially dark, small-budget noir heist film that packs a big wallop! In the scene above, sexual tensions run high and things get out-of-hand as the next-door neighbor, Gloria Grahame—playing a mother who becomes caught up in a fatal attraction of her own doing—gets more than she bargained for from psychotic Robert Ryan.

Fred Schneider: Hollywood Goddess Rachel Ticotin from Con-Air. I agree with this blogger. Rachel Ticotin is definitely an underrated badass.

The Action Elite: Rachel Ticotin may not be an A-list name but you’ve seen her in some of the best action movies of all time; I’ve always found she really sticks out in the movies she’s in as she is a master of playing tough women who are also likeable.

Who can forget her as Melina in the classic Arnold movie Total Recall? Her fight with Sharon Stone was hardcore, with them literally kicking the Hell out of each other. Rather than waiting to be rescued by our hero, she was kicking just as much ass, if not more!

She has always played strong female characters and never the annoying squealing sidekick that so many women were lumbered with during the 80’s.

She can play tough but it doesn’t feel forced; you believe every character she plays and she always brings authenticity to her roles.

Police Detective Ed Cornell (Richard Boone) takes the case and is obsessively determined find her killer. ThroughVicki (1953) flashbacks, we discover that Vicki was a beautiful waitress who was discovered by talent promoter, Steve Christopher (Elliott Reid), while she is working the nightshift in a New York diner. With the help of columnist Larry Evans (Max Showalter) and a famous actor named Robin Ray (Alexander D’Arcy), Vicki is turned into an overnight star. Not long after, she decides to go to Hollywood, thus terminating her working relationship with all three men. Detective Cornell seems determined to convict Christopher, especially when he discovers that Christopher and Vicki’s sister, Jill (Jeanne Crain), are falling in love. I’m guessing 15/16 thousand yards and at least 20 more TDs …he was in his prime then.

Christopher Allison: you can argue the alternative too: the fact that he didn't have as many miles on his legs/knees going into the Joe Gibbs era enabled him to last as long as he did, and score as many TDs as he ended up with.

Fred Schneider: Christopher is right. JR probably doesn't win a Super Bowl with the Redskins in the 1980s, at least not as the feature TB, if he played TB his whole career and didn't take 1980 off. But Kieran is also right that JR would've rushed for a lot more yards, had he been a full-time TB. He could've also been a great receiver out of the backfield with his hands, speed, and power. But that would've taken some miles off him as well.

Earned his money by making big catches over the middle of the field and risking major injuries. As well as big TD catches down the field. The Redskins are still getting screwed by the PFHOF when it comes to Joe Jacoby, Dexter Manley, and Gary Clark. And maybe we can thank Dan Snyder for that as well.

2/12/2023 - Fred Schneider: Anyone who knows their NBA history, who loves NBA history, knows who the two main characters in this photo are. The Celtics-Pistons rivalry officially started with the 1987 Eastern Conference Finals, but it was already there before that, probably since since 1984, since they had a hard fought, physical playoff series in 85. The Larry Bird Celtics, were the standard, that Bill Laimbeer and he Pistons were trying to accomplish for themselves.

2/13/2023 - Fred Schneider: 1983 is not the best season in the Giants-Eagles rivalry. The Giants were 3-12, the Eagles were 5-11. But both teams lost a lot of very close games. Another good Giant-Eagle game at Philadelphia Veterans Stadium.

Italic NY 1975: "We go back to the 1983 season, when the Giants traveled to Veteran's Stadium. First quarter Eagles quarterback Ron Jawarski is sacked by Lawrence Taylor. Later Kicker Ali Haji-Sheik gives the Giants an early 3-0 lead. Late in the 1st Jawarski is intercepted by Mark Haynes. That sets up Butch Wolfolk, who sweeps in from 12 yards out 10-0 Giants. Later Jersey Joe Pisarchek is sacked by Harry Carson. Before the Half, Haji-Sheik blasts a 48-yard field goal 13-0 Giants. Late 3rd Ali Haji-Sheik gives the Giants a 16-0 lead with his 3rd field goal of the game. Later Pisarchek is sacked again this time by George Martin. 4th quarter the late John Tuggle barrels in from 6 yards out giving the Giants a 23-0 lead. Later Pisarchek is sacked again this time by Casey Merrell. Final Giants win 23-0."

2/26/2023 - Fred Schneider: I saw the 1985 Bears-Cowboys game from Texas Stadium, on YouTube a couple months ago. I might be in a slim minority on this and I'm not even a Cowboys fan, but I really don't believe, if you look at the two rosters that year, that the Bears were that much better than the Cowboys in 85. I think the Bears were just that great on defense in that game.

It took the Cowboys 2 quarters to make any adjustments at all, against the Bears outside, red dog, blitz. Bears LB Otis Wilson (55 in the photo) must have had 10 pressures and hits against the Cowboys QB's all by himself in that game.

Going into this game, it looked like it was going to be a great game. Perhaps the two defenses in the NFL that season (at least as far as personal) and Cowboys were excellent on offense. And the Bears had that great running game and big play passing game. But their defense simply took over and dominated the show and won 44-0.

2/18?2023 - Fred Schneider: I don't know this for a fact, but I believe this is also from the Bears 44-0 victory over the Cowboys, at Texas Stadium from 1985.

Walter Payton had a good game. Actually, QB Steve Fuller even though he got off to a good start and Cowboys defense played well early in the game, especially the 1st quarter, played well also. He completed some passes down the field, including a TD pass and made some plays on the run. But of course its Buddy Ryan's 46 defense that was the story of this game. All the sacks, pressures, and turnovers.

2/19/2023 - Fred Schneider: I believe this is from the 1984 NFC Championship between the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers, but I don't know for sure. But something tells me that there might be a few Bears out there. So feel free to weigh in if you know that this is either from 1984 NFC Championship, 1985 regular season, or perhaps a different game.

The 1984 NFC Championship was a battle of 2 great defenses. But as 49er fans will tell you (and I'm not one of them) the Bears offense forgot to show up. Bears QB Jim McMahon being too fragile to play barely half a season, let alone an entire season, didn't help the Bears pre-1985 or after that, either.

@Jim Vanderlans: Remembering Tim Rossovich who was born on this day in 1946.
Philadelphia Eagles (1968–1971)
San Diego Chargers (1972–1973)
Philadelphia Bell (1974–1975)
Houston Oilers (1976)
🏈 Games played = 88
🏈 Interceptions = 3
🏈 Fumble recoveries = 10
✅ Tim played college football at the University of Southern California, and was one of five USC Trojans players taken in the first round of the 1968 NFL Draft after his senior year. Rossovich played for the National Football League Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers, and Houston Oilers between 1968 and 1976. He played in the Pro Bowl in 1969.
✅ Rossovich roomed with Tom Selleck in college, and he appeared on three episodes of Selleck’s CBS series Magnum, P.I. from 1986-88.
✅ Six-foot-4 and 245 pounds in his prime, Rossovich got started in Hollywood by doing stunts on the 1978 Burt Reynolds film Hooper. He played a bodyguard on the first and second seasons of ABC’s Soap in 1978 and ’79 and was a boxer in the Barbra Streisand-Ryan O’Neal movie The Main Event (1979).
✅ He later showed up on other shows including Matt Houston, Hart to Hart, The A-Team, Remington Steele, The Fall Guy, The New Mike Hammer, Hunter, MacGyver, Jake and the Fatman and Baywatch and on the big screen in The Long Riders (1980), Looker (1981), Night Shift (1982) and The Sting II (1983).

@Basketball Republic: Elvin Hayes

One could easily make the case that Elvin Hayes is the greatest player in franchise history, and I honestly see him and Unseld as interchangeable. “The Big E” played in Washington for nine seasons, making the All-Star team in eight of those years. Hayes racked up numerous accolades throughout his Hall of Fame career, including 12 All-Star appearances, six All-NBA selections, two All-Defensive Team selections, and an NBA Championship with the Bullets in 1978. He is a D.C. sports legend and one of the greatest power forwards of all time.

@Basketball Republic: Charles Barkley

Barkley didn’t play a position; he played Basketball. He was one of the greatest rebounders in NBA history and he was actually short in stature for his position. Barkley arrived as the Sixers were starting to get old, and with Barkley’s help, the Sixers remained a constant playoff team until his departure.

4/27/2023 - @Matt Bennett: Offensively, you’re really going to compare one of the league’s most dynamic and efficient scorers with one of the most mechanical, inefficient and overrated offensive players?
Hayes: 21.3 ppg, 1.8 apg, .458%, .677%, TS: .492
Bernard on One Leg: 22 ppg, 3.9 apg, .483, .796%, TS: .538
Hayes had only one move (and King’s version was better), he could barely dribble, he didn’t pass, he forced shots, he disappeared in big games and he didn’t make his teammates better.
He was loathed by teammates and coaches.
To name just a few, Pearl, Dandridge, Ruland, Jeff Malone, Webber and Beal were all better offensive players.

@Fred Schneider: Sometimes I get the feeling that all the statisticians and accountants reply to me. As well as people who don’t bother to read the comments that they reply to. Perhaps they also try to land planes blindfolded, while they’re reading more stats. Again, I’m not talking about the entire careers of both players in the NBA. Just their time with the Bullets. You simply can’t credibly argue that Bernard King was a better Bullet than Elvin Hayes, who retired as the best power forward ever.

@Matt Bennett: You wrote: “Definitely the greatest Bullet/Wizard offensive player ever.” He’s not even close. In his own team, Dandridge was better.
As for retiring as the greatest power forward ever, that’s a disingenuous statement since back-to-the-basket, post-up “power forwards” first emerged during Hayes’s career. He was, arguably, the first but he was quickly outclassed by the likes of Dantley, McHale, Malone and Barkley.
Before him, guys like Elgin, Pettit, Heinson Debusschere and Jerry Lucas were simply called forwards and they were all face-up perimeter players
Hayes was and is totally overrated as an offensive player. He was a selfish gunner, a volume scorer who shot 45% for his career and choked under pressure.
Beal will finish his career as the team’s 2nd most important player, after Unseld. Hayes will be 3rd but only because of his longevity. Many other Bullets/Wizards were better players but their tenures with the team were shortened.
Unseld, Motta and Dandridge all hated him. Jack Ramsay thought Mo Lucas was much better.

@Fred Schneider: Right, the greatest Bullet/Wizard offensive player ever, Elvin Hayes. You can’t credibly argue that Bernard King was a better Bullet than Elvin, when he was with the Bullets. It’s a ridiculous statement on your part. Almost everything that Bernard King accomplished during his career, was before he came to Washington and before he broke his leg.

5/01/2023 - @Matt Bennett: wore #11 in high school, I went to virtually every home playoff game 1978 and 1979 l and I held season tickets in the 90s and 2000s.
Obviously, Hayes was a better shot-blocker and rebounder than King and he put up greater career offensive TOTALS but, statistically, King put up better averages in a Washington uniform, as I posted (and his 90-91 season dwarfed any season that Hayes had).
As for the eye test, there’s no comparison. King was more versatile, better and more efficient. Hayes was a ball-stopper and a Black Hole. He had one move, on the left block, he scored on putbacks and he could finish on the break. That’s it.
King could score on either block, had better post moves, could face up, could handle, could move without the ball, could and would pass and he was a better shooter from the field and from the line and he was a better clutch player.
Hayes never made a clutch shot in his career and disappeared on big games (with the notable exception of the 78 series against the Sixers).
In his career, King shot less than only twice while Hayes only shot better than the league average twice and he finished his career with a pathetic 45% shooting percentage, a horrible figure for a big. He would inevitably force shots against double and triple teams. He would never pass which is why his teammates hated him.
For every shot he missed as a Bullet, King scored about 2.23 points, whereas Hayes scored less about 1.91 points per missed shot. By way of comparison, McHale, Lucas and Karl Malone scored about 2.91, 1.96, 2.57 points per missed shot. King’s career figure was 2.46.
BTW, Wes played with Elvin and coached King and Connie Unseld would tell you that Wes thought Bernard was the better offensive player…as a Bullet.

@Fred Schneider: You just don’t get the point here. You are now trying to argue that Bernard King was a better Bullet, because of one season he had with the Bullets. And putting aside the 9 great seasons that Elvin had with the Bullets, including the 8 All Star appearances, 3 All NBA selections, etc. You must have some idea how ridiculous that sounds.

5/16/2023 - @Fred Schneider: I wouldn’t call 210-184 domination. You don’t make either the AFC or NFC Playoffs, with a 532 winning percentage, at least not back then. In Roger Goodell’s NFL, maybe today. But the AFC did win 8-10 Super Bowls. I think the reasons for that are fairly obvious. Just like in the 1990s with the NFC, the AFC dominated the line of scrimmage. They ran the ball down the throat of the other conference and stuffed the run. They also protected their QB’s and attacked the other QB’s. It was Joe Gibbs and Bill Parcells brand of football as far how how you win the games.

@NFL In The 1970s: The Interconference Situation: Why was the AFC Better in the 1970s?
Throughout the decade of the 1970s, the American Football Conference (AFC) dominated the National Football Conference (NFC) in terms of both regular season victories and Super Bowl wins. From 1970 to 1979, the AFC teams beat the NFC teams a total of 214 times during the regular seasons. The NFC teams could only beat the AFC teams 180 times during the same time span. There were incidentally six ties. Also, in the 10 Super Bowls during the decade, the AFC team won eight of them. Heck, the AFC teams even had 17 more wins over the NFC teams during the preseason games of the 1970s. There were only two seasons (1970 and 1971) where the NFC teams actually had more victories over their AFC foes. The rest of the decade was dominated by the AFC clubs. Why was this so? Any legitimate reasons? I’d be interested to read your intelligent responses.

8/13/2023 - @Fred Schneider: Some people say that Jerry Glanville's Grits Blitz, was a forerunner to Buddy Ryan's 46. I think it's a much smaller version than the 46, at least as far as the size and strength of the Falcons defenders, compared with the Bears. But the style and goals of the defense was very similar, which was to destroy opposing QB's with a total amount of pressure.

@NFL In The 1970s: Remembering Atlanta's "Grits Blitz" Defense.
In the late 1970s, the Atlanta Falcons defense became one of the most impressive young defenses in the NFL.  Once Leeman Bennett became Atlanta's head coach in 1977, he wasted no time in developing a stalwart defensive unit.  With the exception of All-Pro defensive end Claude Humphrey, Bennett's defenders were not household names.  Many were undersized for their positions, but they were extremely quick and agile.  They fit Bennett's scheme of applying pressure to opposing offenses perfectly.  Utilizing a wide variety of blitzes from several linebackers on almost every play, it took a while for many teams to adjust to what the Falcons were doing.  Atlanta's defense during those years even had a catchy nickname...the "Grits Blitz."  In 1977, they established a league record of only 129 points allowed, a record that almost assuredly will never be broken.  In 1978, Atlanta made the playoffs for the first time in their history.
What are your memories of the Atlanta Falcons' Grits Blitz defense?

8/16/2023 - Fred Schneider: I don't think there was a better regular season QB in the NFL, then Fran Tarkenton, during his career, at least in the 1970s. He has the numbers and the won-loss record to prove that. And doing all of this in an era where the rules benefited the defenses on purpose.

@NFL In The 1970s: Was Fran Tarkenton of the Minnesota Vikings, the New York Giants, and then the Minnesota Vikings again...overrated? Sure, he's a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  When he retired following the 1978 season, he owned the league record in virtually every important passing category, including attempts (6,467), completions (3,686), passing yards (47,003), and touchdown passes (342).
But Tarkenton also managed to throw 266 interceptions during his 18-year pro career.  And then there are his three losses in the Super Bowls that he played in to consider.  Today, we seem to measure the greatness of players from the 1970s with the standards that we use for the players today in 2023.  To many, this is unfair and, in many situations, ridiculous.
But what do you think?  Is Fran Tarkenton overrated?  I'm looking forward to reading your opinions and comments.

8/18/2023 - Fred Schneider: Atlanta Fulton Stadium was much better suited for baseball, then football, because the fans were on top of the action and close to the game. Knock out the upper deck in the outfield and it's a very good looking ballpark, if you just played baseball there.

@NFL In The 1970s: Remembering Atlanta Fulton County Stadium.
The first home of the Atlanta Falcons was one of those multi-purpose venues called Atlanta Fulton County Stadium.  It actually opened back in 1965 for a cost of just slightly more than $14 million.  The Falcons shared the use of it with their Major League Baseball counterparts, the Atlanta Braves.  Like most of the "cookie-cutter" stadiums during the 1970s, Atlanta's stadium did not compare with the modern facilities that you see today.  It had a natural grass field all throughout its 32 years of use.  Moreover, it only had five private suites, and a seating capacity of just 60,763 for football games.  It was demolished in 1997.
What are your memories of Atlanta Fulton County Stadium?

9/03/2023 - @Fred Schneider: One of the few times in this divisional rivalry, that both the Falcons and Saints had good teams, going into the game. So their fans had real reasons to hate each other. Both teams were in the NFC Playoff race for most of 1978.

@The NFL In The 1970s: Remembering Atlanta's Infamous "Big Ben" Play.
On November 12, 1978, the Atlanta Falcons were down to their last chance in a crucial game at New Orleans.  Atlanta desperately needed to win this game in order to keep their wild card hopes alive, but their options were slim.  With just 10 seconds left to play and trailing by four points, Falcons quarterback Steve Bartkowski (#10 in photo) needed a miracle touchdown, but his offense was 57 yards away from scoring.
Enter the miracle.  Bartkowski flooded the right side of the field with two wide receivers (Alfred Jenkins and Wallace Francis) and had them both run deep fly patterns alongside the far sideline.  The Saints defense immediately employed their prevent defense, in an effort to stop any long bomb.  The New Orleans' defensive strategy failed, however.  After Bartkowski launched the ball deep downfield, Saints defensive back Clarence Chapman leaped for the ball at the 15-yard line, alongside of Francis of the Falcons.  Both men tipped the ball up in the air.  Jenkins was trailing the play, and he caught the deflected ball as it descended at the 12-yard line, then sprinted untouched for the winning touchdown.
The play was called "Big Ben Right" in the Atlanta huddle, but it went down in history as simply, Atlanta's "Big Ben" play.  It gave the Falcons a vital 20-17 victory, as they went on to earn their first ever playoff appearance in that 1978 season.  If you are interested in seeing the "Big Ben" play, click on the link to the Atlanta Falcons' 1978 highlight film below.

9/12/2023 - @Hard Times BBQ: Dirty hit, try hitting him when he’s got the ball! Hit a defenseless QB. Joe won 2 Super Bowls after this, water off a ducks back.

@Fred Schneider: You sound like a true 49ers fan. It was a clean, great hit. You don't have to hit the QB why he still has the ball. You are allowed a couple of seconds. What Montana accomplished after this game, is irrelevant.

9/16/2023 - @Fred Schneider: Before Billy Sims and Barry Sanders, the Detroit Lions has Dexter Bussey. The Lions were putting together very good teams, both on offense and defense, under Monte Clark in the mid and late 1970s. I'm surprised they didn't win a lot more back then.

10/04/2023 - @Andy Burdetsky: The only coach that owned Gibbs is not on the list.

@Craig Phillips: Owned? Who that? Tom Flores? Travesty it took till 2021 for Flores to join the HoF.

@Andy Burdetsky: Parcells.

@Craig Phillips: Gibbs' Super Bowl teams--in 1982, '87 and '91--swept the Giants each of those years in the season series.

@Andy Burdetsky: Ray Handley was the coach in 91 , also lost a big game to them in there 86 championship game and got swept that season. I’m not sure what their head to head record was but Parcells got the best of Gibbs for sure.

@Fred Schneider: So in conclusion: Neither Bill Parcells owned Joe Gibbs or vice-versa. The Redskins and Giants had a great rivalry in the 1980s, period.

10/05/2023 - @Fred Schneider: Not the inventor of the vertical spread offense (as I call it) but the head coach that perfected it. Even when the Chargers became mediocre in the mid 1980s, they were still very good on offense.

@The NFL In The 1970s: Don Coryell was indeed a visionary.  He realized all throughout the 1960s during his days as the head coach of San Diego State University, that the offensive philosophies of football were involved in an eventual transition of focus.  Coryell felt that the passing game was going to be the primary means with which future offenses would advance the ball.  He was correct in that belief.
Coryell (in photo standing with St. Louis quarterback Jim Hart) helped to bring about that transition of strategy during the 1970s in the NFL, first as the head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals from 1973 to 1977, then as the head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 1978 to 1986.  Along the way, he infused a variety of methods to take the utmost advantage of throwing the football.  Moreover, he also made great use of the talents of his offensive personnel.
Coryell's Cardinals won back-to-back division titles in 1974 and 1975, surprising practically every pro football expert.  For his efforts, Coryell was named the NFL's Coach of the Year in 1974.  His "Cardiac Cards" of 1975 were one of the most exciting teams in the league, as they pulled off numerous games during the waning moments.  In his years with the Chargers, Coryell oversaw the incessant aerial bombing of opposing defenses, with strong-armed quarterback Dan Fouts throwing to the likes of John Jefferson, Kellen Winslow, and Charlie Joiner.
Coryell was finally enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023, an honor that should have been his decades ago.  What are your memories of Don Coryell and his offensive philosophies?

10/13/2023 - @Steve Matza: Just wanted to give Fran Tarkenton some respect. Hardly ever mentioned as one of the greatest of all time. All this man did was retire owning all the significant passing records. Could you imagine how well his style would translate in today’s game when all you have to do is breathe heavy on a QB to get 15! I know most of you guys saw him play. Losing 3 Super Bowls is his biggest knock but he lost to some all time great teams. Fran was The Man!

10/21/2023 - @Fred Schneider: That's easy. Joe Dumars. Joe D was a great, all around, two-way guard. Reggie Miller was basically a mid, to up double-figure scorer for most of his career, even though he was generally the 1st option on several 40 win Pacers teams. Reggie was a great clutch shooter, which is why he gets the respect that he does. But Dumars was the better player.

10/28/2023 - @Fred Schneider: Bloomington Metropolitan similar to Milwaukee Country, was one of those stadiums that was technically a multi-purpose stadium, but only because both baseball and football were played there. But both stadiums were always baseball first simply because they were better suited for baseball. The New York Giants played at Yankee Stadium for like 20 years, but that's considered one of the best baseball parks ever. The Bears played at Wrigley Field for a long time. Again, one of the best baseball parks ever. The Patriots played at Fenway Park for like 10 years. That's perhaps the best baseball park ever. And I could go on. Back in the 1960s and 70s, taxpayers didn't want to personally invest in multiple outdoor stadiums, for multiple sports. And I can see why.

@The NFL In The 1970s: Remembering Old Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, Minnesota.
In the 1970s, there were few iconic places across the NFL landscape that offered more of a homefield advantage than Metropolitan Stadium did for the Minnesota Vikings.  Its capacity of 49,784 meant that it was one of the smallest stadiums in the pro ranks.
Nevertheless, the Vikings won a lot of games in the old ballpark.  A lot of games.  Minnesota posted 54 regular season wins at home during the 1970s.  "The Met," as it was called, also saw a total of seven postseason games during the decade, with the Vikings winning five of those games.  Perhaps the two greatest victories for the Vikes at Metropolitan Stadium occurred in the 1974 and the 1976 NFC Championship Games, where Minnesota defeated the Los Angeles Rams in both of those title matchups.
Do you have any special memories of Metropolitan Stadium? If so, please share them with us here!

11/04/2023 - @Fred Schneider: Shaquille O'Neal who admitted to weighing over 400 pounds when he played, which is probably why he got tired in the 4th and perhaps contributed to all his miss free throws, ranking him over Wilt Chamberlain, and Tim Duncan over Larry Bird, this list is barely worth looking at.

11/05/2023 - @Fred Schneider: So being the best center and player in NBA history, is not about what one brings to the league as a player and what their abilities might be, what they accomplish, but the size and popularity of the league, at the time that they played. That sounds like the modern NBA, not the real NBA.

@Daniel Jones: Can y’all stop overrating Bill Russell and Wilt Chambleran ? They played in a horrible era 9 teams in the league it’s not hard to win mvps and rings when there’s 1/3 of the competition not to mention the lack of talent back then.
